MINISTRIES

God has given us a mandate to transform our community. He has told us that the vision is greater than a building. The current ministries of the church which are described below, all work together to fulfill the mission statement of the church.

CURRENT MINISTRIES

  1. MEN'S MINISTRY At present, the men's ministry is designed to help men learn to be men of God. Using biblical principles they are led to discover God's purpose for men in the family, the church and the world.
  2. WOMEN'S MINISTRY The women's ministry is designed to help women learn to be women of God. Using biblical principles they are led to discover God's purpose for women in the family, the church and the world.
  3. CHILDREN'S CHURCH Activities include a time of cooperate worship, after which the children are separated into age groups and taught from the Bible using skits, puppetry and other teaching aids.
  4. COMMUNITY CORNER This is a Friday night community outreach programme which occurs in the parking lot of our church property. As a church we host children and teenagers from the community. Our programme is designed to established a relationship with youth of the community, though the following activities: a) Soccer b) Badminton c) Basketball d) Table games e) Netball & Volleyball f) Counseling g) Sharing the gospel - At the end of the evenings activities a short gospel message is shared and prayers offered. h) Soup Kitchen - Soup is shared to every person attending community corner. Number of persons fed on each Friday night vary between two hundred and three hundred and twenty.
  5. HOME WORK CENTRE Children from the community attend the homework centre between Monday and Wednesday of each week, between 5 and 6:30p.m. each day. Members of the church supervise and assist children with their homework. At the end of each day's activities children are presented with a snack (patties, sandwich etc. and a drink of soymilk).
  6. READING LAB In order to tackle the low level of literacy observed in the community, we have established a reading laboratory. Trained personnel assess children, and a programme has been designed to improve their literacy skills.
  7. COMMUNITY VISITATION On a weekly basis members of the church conduct door to door visitation in various areas of the community. Time is spent visiting Sunday school children and their parents, and meeting new members of the community.
  8. PASTOR'S PRAYER BREAKFAST Upper Room Community hosts and sponsors a bi - monthly prayer breakfast, for an average of 8 - 10 pastors from our local minister's fraternal.. Together we pray for our ministries, each other and our community.

FUTURE PROGRAMMES FOR DEVELOPING SKILLS TRAINING

CLOTHING AND TEXTILES: Recently, the church was presented with a gift of five industrial sewing machines and several rolls of materials. These will be used to provide training and employment for young people in the community. At present no room is available to house this activity.

CULINARY ARTS: Through the kind donations of members we have put in place a fairly, well equipped kitchen. These facilities will be used to provide training in the culinary arts.
